Elius Spatianus is an historian and agent of Emperor Diocletian, who commanded him to find the truth on the death of Antinoos, Emperor Hadrian's young lover. Elius goes to Antinoopolis, and vists Antinoos'temple. There's something weird going on, as Elius's search is hampered by mysterious enemies who seem determined to kill to prevent him reaching the truth. All the novel is permeated by melancholy, and the memory of that unfortunate Love, which Hadrian made immortal in human memory, like David and Jonathan's.
A gripping novel to read and savour!
